Justice League

SPOILER ALERT!!! You have been warned 🙂

ONE SENTENCE SYNOPSIS: When Steppenwolf and his army threaten the world, Batman decides that it is time to form a team, the members of which are Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg, to bring Superman back to life and to defeat Steppenwolf.

Justice League is essentially DC Comics’ film for creating a team of superheroes. Although some of the characters’ pasts have already intertwined such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, other characters such as the Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman have not been introduced to the team. With that said, the film takes too much time to tell the back stories of these characters than focus on team building. It seems that since there is time spent with each character in their own private lives that when they come together to form a team, the dynamic is very cold, but the characters are all ready to become a well-oiled team all of a sudden. Although there are moments to lead up to this group dynamic, it seemed somewhat abrupt.

It is hard to deny that Justice League has a unique variety of characters with different superpowers. As the Flash can move extremely fast, there was an excellent opportunity to try a new sequence with the Flash running. Although I liked many moments with the Flash, I can not deny that I was a little disappointed that there were not many cool sequences. I did enjoy the slow-motion moment when the Flash is running around Superman, and they lock eyes. Superman’s head stays perfectly still, yet his eyes follow the exact movement of the Flash. It was a humorous moment!

Although there are many interesting characters in the film, it is evident that there is only one character that is supposed to matter and that is Superman. For example, Batman really needed to gather a team so that he could bring Superman back to life. Once this happens, Superman is more than capable of practically defeat Steppenwolf by himself. Because the film seems to rely on Superman’s abilities too much it kind of defeats the purpose of having a team.

As Justice League is a film about superheroes, there were many action scenes most of which heavily relied on slow motion. At some points in the movie, slow motion worked in the film’s favor, and at other moments it became redundant. The film also used a lot of CGI which did not always give the movie a very clean appearance. Instead, there were many times throughout the movie in which it felt and looked like a video game. This can definitely be seen with the big, bad, and obvious villain, Steppenwolf.

Overall, Zack Snyder’s Justice League has some interesting moments, yet the film also seems to be lacking in more than one department.
