Spider-Man: Homecoming

RATING: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

ONE SENTENCE SYNOPSIS: After being recruited by Tony Stark to fight Team Captain America, Peter Parker (a.k.a. Spider-Man) tries to gain Stark’s attention, defeat Vulture, go to the homecoming with his crush, Liz Allan, and keep his Spider-Man identity a secret from Aunt May.

Side Characters: Jon Watts’s Spider-Man: Homecoming exhibits some exciting and fun side characters such as Ned, Michelle, and Ultimate Prowler. Although there is a variety of roles, it seems almost as if the film did not explore these characters very much. Parker’s best friend Ned is a loveable character who is there to offer support, friendship, and of course Star Wars Lego time, yet it seems as if he is placed in the stereotyped, sidekick, friend role. Another character that peaked my interest but is only in the film for the tiniest bit is Mechelle. Throughout the film, she offers some insight into her character by mentioning things about human equality, yet that is pretty much the extent of her appearance on screen. Lastly, Ultimate Prowler seemed like a cool character who had some valuable perspectives on life. He could have offered the film a lot more had he been in more scenes. Besides the character, when you have Donald Glover in your movie you are supposed to use him in more than one scene! At least that is my opinion :). With all of this said, the story is supposed to be about Peter Parker so it is understandable that the primary focus would be on him. The good news is that the next Spider-Man films have many unique side characters to work off of in the future.

Fun Moments: There were a lot of fun moments in this film! For instance when Peter is taking care of his neighborhood he has many fun adventures. And yes, this film finally shows the process in which a Marvel Superhero, other Iron Man, gets into his suit, which I always wondered about. Other humorous moments are when Peter has taken the safety setting off of his suit and is now learning how to use the unlocked trinkets and features.

Female Roles: I have not decided whether this film does a good job showcasing sexism directed towards women, or if it is completely oblivious to its doing so.  Besides the fact that Liz is used as a plot device, Aunt May receives strange and unnecessary attention from men. Although it is a known fact that Iron Man is somewhat of a playboy, is it really necessary or appropriate for him to comment on Spider-Man’s aunt’s appearance as if that is the most important thing about her? Really, Tony? Next is Ned who also finds Peter’s aunt extremely hot and practically states as much. Also, when Aunt May takes Peter out to dinner, the male waiter brings them free dessert because he finds her attractive. If the purpose of these comments and actions are to remind the audience that Aunt May is indeed attractive, we can all see that for ourselves without the help. The only male individual that I can think of who does appreciate Aunt May for something other than her appearance is Peter. Thank you, Peter.

Tony Stark’s Parenting: I will be the first to admit that Tony has been through a lot, considering that he has just had a massive fight with his friend Steve Rogers, yet his parenting skills are not the greatest. In the beginning, he ignores Peter which causes Peter to try and get his attention. In the end, Tony awards Peter for doing the exact things he told him not to. Even though the “parenting” sends mixed messages to Peter, I do consider the relationship to be interesting. Hopefully, this will progress in the movies to come.

Although I have ranted on some of the points in the film, I did really enjoy Spider-Man: Homecoming. The film has a solid story along with some great shots. I would definitely recommend this film to other individuals who want to watch something fun. If you haven’t seen the movie, you should watch it for the main reason that it is sure to peak your interest for what is to come next in the MCU!
